TITLE: BEFORE/AFTER-SCHOOL EL ELA MCAS PREP TEACHER - GR 8-12

 

POSITION SUMMARY:

This program is designed to help increase the confidence and achievement of EL students participating in ELA MCAS. This after school program will provide students with opportunities to engage in text at their instructional level, working up to higher levels of difficulty, with specific instruction around unpacking the language in the text in order to understand. Students will learn test taking strategies and how to respond to reading in writing using the Writing with Colors scaffolded strategy for text-based essays. All materials will be provided by the EL Director.

 

Snacks are provided for student participants.

 

DATES OF PROGRAM: Winter Session January 6 - March 7 (8 weeks)

                                 2 days per week, choice of flexible days of the week - 1 hour of prep is

                                 provided for every 2 hours of instruction

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Use instructional strategies that are culturally and linguistically sustaining, honoring students assets, prior knowledge, and full linguistic repertoire
  2. Follow scope and sequence of ELA practice items to read and unpack together
  3. Select appropriate hands-on activities and/or games for the latter part of the sessions in order to continue to build listening and speaking skills as well as a sense of community
  4. Differentiate instruction for EL students of various proficiency levels
  5. Supervise students at arrival and dismissal
  6. Document learning experiences on template within google folder of ELA MCAS resources and scope and sequence provided by the EL Director
  7. Share student experience summary/photos with families
  8. Follow all applicable school rules

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. MA Educator Licensure and SEI Endorsement and/or ESL Licensure 
  2. Current Member of Bellingham Public Schools faculty preferred

SALARY: $33 per hour
