TITLE: Athletic Trainer and Strength and Conditioning Position

 

POSITION SUMMARY:

Evaluate and advise individuals to assist recovery from or avoid athletic-related injuries or illnesses or maintain peak physical fitness. May provide first aid or emergency care.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Provide primary athletic training medical coverage for one or more sports at a time including practices and games. Travel only required for varsity football and selected tournament games as needed.
  2. Maintain and supervise the athletic training room on exercise regiments, nutrition or equipment use.
  3. Maintain records, collaborate with the school nurses with the diagnosis and follow-up care of orthopedic injuries and concussions.
  4. Maintain up to date concussion education.
  5. Provide direction and communication to parents when a student is injured.
  6. Evaluate readiness; assess injuries and physical and mental health problems of student-athletes.
  7. Refer parents and students to appropriate follow up medical professionals. 
  8. Conduct baseline concussion testing for all new students at BHS and assist the wellness teachers in administering baseline testing in 8th, 10th and 12th grades.
  9. Work cooperatively with nurses, guidance counselors, teachers, coaches, parents and local medical professionals.
  10. Comply with all the rules and regulations of the State of Massachusetts and the concussion laws.
  11. Provide concussion baseline testing and sideline and post injury testing to all student athletes at Bellingham High School. Establish return to play protocol and up to date concussion education.
  12. Establish protocols and update them as needed for: Emergency Action Plans to include lightning rules, heat injuries and protocols for weather related health issues and concussion plans. 
  13. Communicate with the police, fire and EMTs for proper protocols when needing their assistance.
  14. Assist the Athletic Director with budget and inventory for the athletic training room.
  15. Maintain continuing education units for licensure and to stay up to date on the latest healthcare protocols.
  16. Work in conjunction with the Athletic Director to maintain current pre-participation examinations and other required paperwork.
  17. Provide strength and conditioning programming and services to the sports of Bellingham High School.
  18. The athletic trainer provides coverage to 16 sports, boys and girls freshmen, JV and varsity sports. Travel is required for all away varsity football games. Travel is also required for ice hockey coverage for all home games to the rink in Franklin, MA.
  19. Adheres to the adopted policies of the Bellingham School Committee.

SKILLS/ABILITY:

  1. Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) (Preferred)
  2. Bachelor’s Degree, Required (Master’s Degree Preferred)
  3. 5-10 years’ experience work as a certified athletic trainer.
  4. Experience with rehabilitation is preferred.
  5. Strength and conditioning required.
  6. Ability to work with a variety of age groups, teachers, parents, nurses, guidance and other area medical professionals.
  7. Knowledge of the information and techniques needed to diagnose and treat human injuries, diseases, and deformities. This includes symptoms, treatment alternatives, drug properties and interactions, and preventive health-care measures.
  8. Experience with FamilyID platform, preferred.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES and/or DEGREE REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Licensed as an athletic trainer by the Massachusetts Board of Allied Health Professions (LAT)
  2. Board certified by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (ATC)
  3. CPR/AED Certified

 

SALARY: ($55,000 - $65,000)

START DATE: August 1, 2024

CLASSIFICATION: Singleton

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  1. Requires moving about the gymnasium, or athletic field with coordination and stamina.
  2. Requires walking and running.
  3. Requires ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
