Title: Sub Bus Monitor (District)
FUNCTION: The School Bus Monitor’s prime responsibility is to monitor children assigned to
a Special Education vehicle. The bus monitor is directly responsible to the bus driver who is the immediate supervisor.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Start or end times subject to change with short notice. For Substitute Driver coverage, the employee will be directed to the open positions where coverage is needed by the transportation office.
Schedule: Times (6:45-8:50 am) & (1:55-3:45 pm), approximately
Rate: $19.57/hour Bus Monitor
This in an on call position, assignments vary. Transportation Depertment will contact substitute for openings.
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work closely with the bus driver to supervise the children on the bus in an orderly and courteous manner.
- Assist students on and off the bus as needed.
- Assist with the needs of Special Education student, handicapped and/or wheelchair students as needed, secures and maneuvers wheelchair to and from school, as needed.
- Physical restraint will be the last resort; only to be utilized to protect the safety of the child and other children on this bus. Must be willing to participate in district physical restraint training.
- The bus monitor is responsible for reporting to the teachers any difficulties on the bus or at the bus stop. Serious offenses will be written-up and copies given to the principal, Director of Special Services, the school business administrator and the bus depot supervisor.
- Assume responsibility that may be necessary to ensure efficient monitoring of the special education vehicle.
- Must attend mandatory monthly safety meetings with Vendetti Bus Company.
- Must participate in mandatory safety care training as provided by school department.
- Adheres to the adopted policies of the Bellingham School Committee.
EXPERIENCE:
- Experience in working with children preferred.
- Experience in driving 7D bus preferred.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Good health – willing to submit to a medical examination.
- Minimum – high school graduate and/or school equivalency certificate.
- Must be person of professional and personal integrity.
- Preferably, some experience as a bus monitor. A high degree of patience and tact in dealing with the general public, parents, teachers, administrators, perspective teachers and other personnel.
